Writing is difficult at any grade level, but it is the most challenging in kindergarten. Since small motor skills are still being refined students are at different levels. Some are just learning to hold a pencil, some are still working on controlling it, and others are already writing figures or letters. The only way a student is going to get better at writing, no matter what level they are in, they need to practice it daily. Even when my students are not writing comprehensible letters, they are still expressing themselves through the pictures and formations they create.
My students need the double-sided boards, the draw and write journals, and the Learn to Print Centers and a Ready to Write Prompt Box for a writing center to provide them with many exciting opportunities to practice their writing. The double-sided write and wipe boards are a great, eco-friendly way to practice their letter formation and drawing. The Draw and Write journals are not only great to practice daily, but also a great record of their progress. The four Learning to Print Centers are to be used as a writing center where students at any level can practice as we rotate during learning centers. These are helpful because they will be able to copy letters, copy words, or begin writing independently with use of the references it offers. The Ready to Write Prompt box can be used whole class, small group, or individually to strengthen their writing skills in all three writing genres.
