As I have recently graduated, this will be my first year teaching. Therefore, I am thoughtfully preparing my classroom to accommodate all types of learners I may have. With flexible seating, I am aiming to provide my students with an opportunity to move while they work so that they can channel their young energy. As we do movement games throughout the day to release this energy, my first grade students will need additional opportunities to get their jitters out.
My goal is to provide students with seating choices that help them do their best work. Whether that be a wiggle cushion on their seat or a stretchy band attached to the legs of their chair, I want to help my students stay focused and improve their working stamina.
Although this project supports seating options for students to use throughout the school day, it will be of the most help during our four station reading block. If funded, this project will give students flexible seating options for when they meet with me and when they read and work on their own. The enjoyment of reading is important to instill in students at a young age. Therefore, I would like to aid in formulating this love for reading by providing them with seating choices that help them to read for longer periods of time. By being able to release small amounts of energy moving their feet on a stretchy band under their seat, rocking side to side on a cushion on their seat, or curling up in a comfy chair to read, students will be able to immerse themselves in their learning longer. I know the students will be excited to have some seating options to choose from and I am excited to see their working stamina skyrocket!
