The project for my class is to create a community garden at our center while having our students actively participate in the creation. During the winter months, we will plant seeds indoors. Once Spring and warmer weather returns, we will transfer the seeds to the plant beds we have at our school. We have previously harvested different plants such as lettuce, kale, cilantro and more. This is a good way to teach our students about nature, how plants are grown, where our food comes from and motor skills. Additionally, we want to motivate them to eat healthy by engaging in garden to table practices. Since our school serves low-income families, we would open our community garden for those families who wish to take home the plants harvested. If enough plants are harvested, we would look to a community partner where we could donate the food. One example is the Food Assistance program at Stockton university or the Campus kitchen.
