My students are seniors at an urban, magnet high school which was created to cater to students who were not experiencing success (academically, socially, emotionally or a combination of the three) in a traditional school. Our school is small and focused on building relationships and making learning relevant and meaningful through project-based learning. All of my students are looking for an education that makes sense to their daily lives, that inspires them, that helps them carve a path for their future while providing them an experience that engages their bodies and minds. They come from a variety of backgrounds, but are typically labeled "at risk" because of economic, social, legal, familial, emotional, health, academic and geographic situations that stray from the norm. Because of these differences, they typically have a higher aptitude in areas of creativity, relationships, hands-on work and problem-solving. Few have the time and mentorship to develop skills of introspection.
