When I discovered that I would be teaching a classroom full of eager to learn 5th grade English language learners (ELL) in my English language arts and social studies class this school year, including a handful who speak very little to no English, I first began to panic. Although my students would be working with a trained ELL teacher for half of their school day, I do not speak Spanish and I would be responsible for their learning for the other half of their day. But guess what?! I am also a language learner, so I have decided to immerse myself in this experience with my students. I will be learning Spanish with the assistance of my students, while I engage them in strategies to support their English language acquisition. As a language learner myself, I understand the importance of visuals when trying to comprehend a new language; visuals are not just helpful, but they are essential in the ELL classroom. With a color printer in my classroom, I will have the capability of providing my students instant access to pictures, graphs, diagrams, maps, timelines, clip art, and colorful posters, which will support their access to and comprehension of content, classroom procedures, social emotional concepts, and school expectations. My students and I are incredibly motivated to learn a second language, and a color printer in our classroom will greatly support our goals.
