  • "Sound Instruction!"

    Funded Dec 4, 2019

I’m humbled by the donations to my project. When I teach I look at every single student to see what struggles they are having in literacy and then I create hands on activities to help them become striving readers. Teaching is still my passion after 28 years. I'm truly grateful for support.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Blackwelder

Thank you so much for your generous donation to my first project, Innovate – Achieve – Excel.

Most kids do not need to be taught phonological awareness. They pick it up by being exposed to a rich language environment. But some kids do not automatically develop phonological awareness even with lots of exposure. They need to learn the skills through explicit, hands-on instruction and practice. The Phonological Awareness Instant Learning Centers you purchased for my students will allow me to provide hands-on activities which will help build a strong foundation in phonological awareness for my students. This will allow them to become successful readers.

Dry erase boards increase student engagement at any grade level. I work with students from kindergarten to fifth Grade. All of my students are more excited and on task when they are able to complete activities on dry erase boards. Dry erase boards also allow for quick assessments. I can walk around my classroom and see the students who are struggling and provide instant feedback and I am also able to see the skills that I may need to reteach. Your kind donation purchased different sized dry erase boards for my students. They will benefit all of the different sizes and ages in my classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Blackwelder

Students who continue to struggle in reading by third grade, lack phonological awareness skills as well as alphabet knowledge. These resources will allow me to provide hands-on activities and strategies for my students in these areas. Phonological awareness is a crucial component to becoming a reader. Struggling readers are more likely to learn essential reading skills if direct and explicit instruction is provided. I want to be able to “innovate” changes and new ideas that will increase my students' reading ability so they can “achieve” success and “excel” not only in my classroom but in their regular classroom. Innovate • Achieve • Excel - These words reflect the vision of my classroom as my students strive to become lifelong learners.
