Picture this. The librarian reads the book The Three Little Pigs. Students will make houses for the pigs using straw (art straws), sticks (popsicle sticks) and bricks (legos). When students are done building their houses, they have to see if their house can withstand the Big Bad Wolf (blowdryer with a picture of the Big Bad Wolf on it). Students will have to design their houses to properly withstand the wolf, and if it gets knocked down, they will have to critically think of how they can rebuild it to make it stronger.
This is just one of the many fun activities that we would do with the items in this project! Students can build catapults using rubber bands and popsicle sticks, make a character or object from the story using origami paper. They can also make a character from the story by using markers or pom poms, craft stems, feathers, wiggly eyes or buttons, and magic noodles. Masks can be made using paper plates, markers, wonderfoam peel and stick, feathers and elastic cord. Students can make bracelets to represent the mood of the story by using the elastic cord and pony beads.
Students will be able to make stories come alive by having the opportunity to complete STEM activities and projects that relate directly to the stories by using craft resources. Not only will this help them think more critically, but it will help them comprehend the story on a deeper level. The Copernicus Library On Wheels will give students an organized area to collect all of their STEM materials from. This will also teach them the importance of organization.
By funding this project, you will give my students the opportunity to think critically in such a fun way! Our stories will truly come alive, and the students' love for reading will grow even more.
