The way math is taught has changed drastically in the last couple of years. Teachers don't stand in front of the class and write algorithms on the board for students to copy. Sometimes students don't even have books to look up those algorithms. Instead they discover them. Teachers need a place for students to gather and collaborate. Desks are not conducive for this type of learning. You can't have a poster board to create a floor plan or play a dice game at a desk. Furthermore, all student groups are not working on the same task. Therefore, different types of furniture groupings are necessary. I am trying to create a classroom where students can work together and learn the collaborative behaviors that they will utilize the rest of their life.
