Providing my students with choices in grouping and seating arrangements allows them to make responsible choices for themselves as learners. Having a variety of table heights and seating choices give students the freedom to explore how they work best in different settings. This past year, my lone standing desk was seen as a reward to stand/sit at during class, so who knows what motivating factor it would be to have two tables and stools!! Students with high energy may prefer to stand during class rather than sit. The variety of tables and seating allows groups to separate into different environments to work in. Students will be more engaged in activities if the routine of rows of desks or tables are rearranged. Hopefully this small addition to my classroom is the start to a new setting for my students to work and feel at home.
