My students come every day to my class energized and ready to learn, but learning can be challenging for them due to the sensory processing needs. Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder need to have access to items that will help them fulfill their sensory needs. Each of the items that i have requested will help my students self-regulate so that they can be better prepared for learning and interacting with others. Some of of the manipulatives that I am requesting for my project is a weighted vest and a weighted blanket, a weighted blanket or vest provides pressure and sensory input for individuals with autism and other disorders. A weighted blanket can be used as a calming tool or for sleep. The pressure of the blanket provides proprioceptive input to the brain and releases a hormone called serotonin which is a calming chemical in the body. These calming/sensory manipulatives will serve as a therapeutic device that will provide my students with special needs with personalized sensory input. My students currently have access to only two sensory manipulatives that they have to share among other 12 students. Each one of my student have a different sensory need. By donating to this project, this will allow each one of my students to have access to the items that are tailor to their specific needs, so that they can excel.
