My experience teaching reading to kids has taught me that the most effective way to turn a kid into a voracious reader is by putting the right book into his/her hands. Most of us can identify the one or two books that turned us into readers, the book where everything clicked and we were lost into a world of words and wonders and friendships and loss and victory and adventure. Finding that book for my kids is one of the most significant things I can do as a reading teacher. As famed reading expert Nancie Atwell states, our jobs as adults is "to move heaven and earth to put that book into a child's hands.” Students enter my classroom with a wide range of abilities and interests. I may have some students entering my classroom reading at a second grade level, while others leave my classroom reading at a middle school level. This project will help me meet the needs of my struggling readers, who desperately need to find that book that will turn them into lifelong readers. An added challenge for these readers is their books are shorter and read more quickly, which requires a greater number of texts for them to choose from.
