Phonemic awareness and phonics are foundational to building readers. Hearing sounds, attaching them to letters and being able to build and decode words unlock reading for young learners. These skills must be practiced daily in a variety of ways to help children build connections that make up the foundation for reading success. Research shows that strong phonemic awareness and phonics skills is key to helping all students learn to read. The items in this project provide high interest for children. As they use the magna tiles to represent sounds in words, students will feel as if they are playing. Connecting the sounds (tiles) together will give them a visual representation of how sounds go together to build words. Each of the high interest items in this project will be used in engaging literacy activities, keeping students focused and excited about learning.
