  • Books in Spanish

    Funded Oct 26, 2018

Thank you for your generous donations to the Greenfield High School library! Your contributions to our school have made a significant impact on our students and their learning.

The new collection of Spanish books we have in our library has attracted much attention and is already greatly appreciated by the students it serves. Students who have felt the library didn't have anything for them are delighted to now find a wide array of titles that they want and are able to read. I wish you could see their eyes light up as they browse through the new books, often collecting multiple titles to borrow at once.

Teachers have embraced the new collection as well. Several teachers have sent students with limited English to the library to pick out Spanish choice reading books and have reported a remarkable increase in engagement. One teacher saw a student was not participating at all during choice reading time. He came to the library and selected an adult fiction book by a renowned Spanish writer. The student loved the book so much and became so engrossed in it that he refused to turn it in to the teacher at the end of choice reading time. Another teacher took a photo of two of her students reading the same teen fiction book, one in English and one in Spanish. It is truly wonderful that they both can now access the same literature and then discuss it together. Books offer a wonderful opportunity for connection and fostering community. In a time of divisiveness in our country, particularly around cultural difference, making our school more welcoming and building relationships is a top priority.

Your generosity has enabled the library to serve GHS students more equitably. Thank you for recognizing the importance of supporting the literacy of students from all backgrounds.

    Sincerely,

    Jessica M. Pollock

  • Active Ball Chairs

    Funded Aug 15, 2018

Thank you for your generous donations to the Greenfield High School library! Your contributions to our school have made an impact on our students and their learning.

The active ball chairs have been a huge hit in the library since they arrived. Students love having a seating option that allows their bodies to move while they learn. The funky, youthful design of the chairs appeals to our teens and makes them feel at ease in the library space. Some like to use the ball chairs for an entire class, while others prefer to take a break by bouncing a few times on the chair before returning to their work. Students who need an alternate seating option are immediately drawn to the ball chairs, and they feel comfortable accessing the accommodation they require because the chairs are so readily available.

Teachers have appreciated the active ball chairs also. Sometimes they bring their classes to the library simply to break up the monotony of sitting in classrooms, and they appreciate the flexible seating options students have while here. There is a teacher who personally uses one of the ball chairs every time she is in the library and even bought one for her home. She says it is the only chair that makes her body feel comfortable and supported. Yesterday, the district's physical therapist came in to inquire where we had gotten the active ball chairs. Apparently there is a special education student who has success with these chairs and they are looking into getting one for the classroom. I love that people get to test what will work for them in the library before making a purchase for use elsewhere.

Your generosity has transformed the library into a more accommodating space for the students of Greenfield High School. Thank you for recognizing the importance of supporting students' bodies as well as their minds.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pollock

Have you ever sat in meetings all day long and found yourself physically exhausted and mentally fatigued? Welcome to the reality of most school children, who are asked to sit in their chairs without moving hour after hour for six hours or more a day. Recent research shows that sitting is terrible for our health, and it goes against what our bodies are designed to do. Limiting the flow of oxygen by sitting for long periods, slows thinking and hampers learning. The library in our school supports student learning in many ways, including offering various learning environments that students can tailor to their own needs. Our space has cozy chairs for reading or discussion. There are tables with wheels that can be set up for group work, configured for larger meetings, or cleared out of the way to create a mock courtroom. I would like to offer students more choice in their seating options to maximize their learning potential, whether with a class or working independently. The ball chairs I am requesting funding for, would offer students an alternate seating option that would allow them to be active while still engaged in their learning.
