My students recently went to an educational competition. They were asked to build and program a robot to accomplish a given task. However, since we don't have the necessary technology available to us on a day-to-day basis, my students were at a disadvantage. This iPad will help level the playing field for these students. Being able to learn coding and practice creating programming to accomplish tasks will sharpen this skill. Many of the jobs they will apply for in the future will benefit from having a foundation knowledge of 21st century skills. Having this iPad will allow for different structures of learning in my classroom. Students can look up pictures of catapults and then design their own to help in future competitions. Another way they will be used is by creating presentations over different cultures and ancient civilizations. Recently, we dove into the Han and Qyn dynasties of China. They could collaborate on group findings by sharing through the cloud. I could download apps for various geography practice skills for a land form, landmark, and/or city center, which would allow me to have activities for both my highest performing and most struggling students. Students could practice map skills and "visit" the places we learn about in class through virtual field trips.
