When students are asked to participate in reviewing a whole years’ worth of material, the task may seem daunting. As a teacher I have to find exciting and creative ways to motivate students to study. What better way to do this than by solving clues, reading secret messages with invisible ink that will eventually unlock a toolbox to "save them from zombies." The stage will be changed by using LED flexible strip lights around the room. In this educational game, students must work in small groups to solve problems. The solutions lead to clues written with invisible disappearing ink that correspond to a variety of locks that open up the Waterloo Portable Series toolbox. For example, in order to unlock the lock #1 (Wordlock letter dial combination) students must work on key ideas and details. In order to unlock Lock #2 (Master Lock Padlock - Directional Lock) students have to answer clues about craft and structure. The third lock #3 (Master Padlock - Key Lock) has students working on range and level of text complexity. With the final lock #4 (Keekit number combination lock) students must use integration of knowledge and ideas to find clues that will unlock the final step and lead everyone to safety. The best part is that this can be done with any subject using the same tools!
