  • LCD Doodle Boards to Solve Math Problems!

    Funded Oct 31, 2023

Many thanks to you for donating funds towards our LCD Doodle Boards! Since we received the boards, student excitement and engagement has increased tremendously. When our students first found out that the project was approved, and the doodle boards were shipped, they all shouted out, "Thank you so much Mrs. Wilkerson"!!

I immediately let them know that the doodle boards were on their way to them-- only because of amazing donors like you!!

The doodle boards are used frequently by students to solve math practice problems in class. They absolutely LOVE being able to show their work on the doodle boards- especially when their work shows up in bright, vibrant colors! More students are willing to show their work in class because it's something new and exciting!

On the last math unit assessment, the pass rate for the class increased drastically from the math assessment that was given, prior to using the doodle boards. The students want to use their boards all the time, and they even have a student that is the "doodle board helper"! They pass them out to the students, and make sure they get packed back up neat and tidy, so that they will last.

I am so thankful to you for your support and kindness!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Wilkerson

  • In Need of Voice Translation Device For My EL Learners

    Funded Oct 11, 2023

Thank you so much for contributing to the voice translation device, for my English Language (EL) students! I've had the great pleasure of using the translation device each week in class, and it has made such a difference!

Technology has come a long way, and having the ability to use technology to engage my EL students has been priceless. The translation device allows me to speak in full sentences with my EL students (during one-on-one and small group time), and then have it translated into their own native language. Once my words are translated, they click the button and can speak right back to me (in their own language), and it translates for me as well. We can have full on conversations about our lessons with clarity and understanding!

The majority of my EL students speak Spanish, Dari, and Pashto. This one device not only translates my speech, but also has the ability to take pictures of documents (worksheets, text in books, etc.) and then translates it into their language as well! When I walk into the classroom to meet with my EL students, their eyes light up- knowing that for at least some part of their day, they can speak freely in their own language and be understood by their EL teacher.

I cannot thank you enough for your support. Your kindness and willingness to support this project has already made such a positive impact with my EL students. I won't ever forget your thoughtfulness.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Wilkerson

  • Language Arts Fun!

    Funded Apr 8, 2018

I'd like to start off by saying that I'm extremely grateful for you, and your generous donation toward our classroom! It truly amazes me that there are so many kind & caring individuals within our world, that want our generation of students to be as successful as they can.

Within my classroom this school year, it's been a challenge getting my students to become motivated about Language Arts. I encourage them to read each night, and practice their 5th grade reading strategies & standards, but it's quite difficult. Gadgets/technology/video games have become a bit of a distraction to many of my students. So, as an educator, I need to think of as many ways as possible to continue to encourage my students to improve their reading and writing skills- on a daily basis.

When I first introduced the Language Arts board games to my students, they were thrilled!! The Language Arts games have provided a unique way for each of them to practice their 5th grade reading skills, and have fun at the same time. They look forward to completing their work, so that they can have an opportunity to place one of the Language Arts games in class. They've been practicing vocabulary, inferring, using context clues, and so much more! Many, many, many thanks to you for your generous donation! I will truly never forget your kindness.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Wilkerson

  • Let's Meet at the Carpet: Classroom Rug Needed!

    Funded Jul 13, 2018

I want to start off by saying that your donation towards our classroom rug won't ever be forgotten! When the rug arrived at the beginning of the school year, I was so excited, and it's a perfect fit in our room.

During this school year, my students spend a lot of time learning not just from me, but also from one another. All throughout the day, students spread out around the room when reading their library books, working on group assignments, and even when studying for upcoming tests. They love the opportunity to get out of their seats, and spread out on our carpets around the room.

I try very hard to make our learning environment inviting and welcoming. The classroom rug that you contributed to, does exactly that! It blends in very nicely with our bulletin board colors, and the slogan "Wild About Books" on the carpet is perfect! I've been promoting a love for reading this school year, and when I see them with their independent reading books, laying on the carpet, it makes me very happy! Once again, thank you so very much for your kindness!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Wilkerson

A large portion of my language arts students are ESL students. One of the areas that my language arts students struggle greatly with is reading/writing, and vocabulary skills. I've selected a few language arts activities, that can be played during language arts centers within a group, or independently when student work is complete. My goal is to teach my students, that hands on language arts games & activities can make learning fun! As they are engaged and playing these language arts games, they will also be learning critical skills needed in 5th grade. These skills include identifying main idea, recognizing multiple meaning words, building up vocabulary, and using context clues to help build critical thinking.
