Of my 60 algebra students, only a handful have access to graphing calculators. Because this is the first year my school is offering Algebra to 8th graders, we do not have the necessary technology nor many of the resources for each of our students to be motivated and successful with high level material. Currently, my students share the few calculators that they have which results in a lot of waiting around and lost learning time. In addition, students who do not have a calculator have difficulty using the calculators so when they do get the chance to borrow one, they are unable to fully engage in the work. The TI-84 graphing calculators will be used every day in our math class. Giving low-income students access to new technology is an investment in their future. These graphing calculators allow students to tackle larger and more complex math problems, which will prepare them for high school and college-level work. In addition, they will increase our productivity in our 8th grade Algebra class. While this project will impact 60 students this school year, they will be impacting students in my math classes for years to come.
