  • Reading Specialist Inspirational and Motivational Classroom Library

    Funded Aug 14, 2019

Thank you very, very much for the collection of books for my classroom. I am a reading specialist and I work with students from first through seventh grade. The collection of books that you so generously purchased for me has books from second through a sixth grade reading level. Many of the students I work with are 1-2 grades below in their reading ability. Having a variety of texts for them to choose from is important because their classroom teacher's don't typically have such a range in their rooms. For example, a sixth grade teacher most likely does not have books in their classroom that are a second grade reading level.

When I service students in reading within my classroom, it is within a small group. Therefore, they are much more comfortable choosing a book from my library that is at their reading level. I hold reading conferences and help them choose a book that is a genre they enjoy and is at a level that will not be frustrating for them to read.

I am an avid reader, especially of young adult literature. I attempt to read all of the books I am offering in my classroom library so that I have a strong idea of what the book is about. This helps me have a more interesting discussion when helping a student choose a book as well as discussing it as they are reading it. My enthusiasm for choosing books with my students makes my students roll their eyes, but in a way that makes them comfortable and willing to want to read. I do not ask for book reports or any sort of requirement when students borrow my books. My classroom library is for enjoyment only because instilling a love for reading is important for success in life.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Shaheen

  • Orton GIllingham Reading Groups

    Funded Nov 29, 2018

The materials you have chosen to donate to my classroom have been a wonderful addition to my teaching! Having my own ipads has allowed me to purchase very specific spelling and reading apps that the district would not purchase for me otherwise. These apps target the specific reading and phonics concepts I utilize with the Orton Gillingham method, ones which are individualized to each student. Using the ipads allows for differentiated instruction, helps students develop independent work habits, and allows me to incorporate technology into lessons.

The magnetic tile letters are another engaging resource for my students that struggle with phonics. The boards have wonderful picture tiles that are colorful and up to date. The tiles themselves are sturdy and thick, allowing for little fingers to manipulate them easily, and the board is simple and clear for kindergarten and first grade students to use independently.

I am truly thankful for your support and we are grateful every time we use these materials. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Shaheen

Having two iPads would allow for more differentiated instruction and more flexibility to group students for independent work and direct instruction. There are amazing apps that can support the Orton Gillingham reading method. The iPads would allow me to differentiate my groups immensely. Servicing students with an IEP typically means there are very different ability levels in one group. Having iPads would allow me to send students to complete work independently so I can then target different students on their own level of work within a small group. I would have the flexibility to address multiple areas of difficulty by breaking the group into even smaller groups. Plus, using an iPad teaches through a different venue of learning. Technology keeps students engaged. Also, many of the apps allow for assessments which help with progress monitoring. Having magnetic word builders and phonics stamps with fill-in-the-blank templates would be additional multisensory activities that would be very engaging to kindergarteners through to my second graders. These products would allow for more practice building words in a different kinesthetic approach.
