I teach at the historical Washington HS in Atlanta, Ga. I'm the educator of lower income, inner city African American students receiving 100% free & reduced price lunch. As a Science (STEM) educator my students struggle with scientific literacy & connecting how science & technology relates to them. I strive to show them how minorities impact STEM careers & more importantly empower them to change their communities which often are ravaged with poverty. Science is unique as it encompasses all other content areas. Science surprises us with what it discovers and creates. At the core of science's self-modification is technology. Unfortunately, my students do not have proper access to technology outside of their cell phones. Hand-held technology devices & laptops would bring Science and the STEM world alive.....allowing them to have real world experiences that could shape their educational dreams and goals.
