Due to limits in funding for math supplies in particular, I am always short-handed with materials working with my special ed students. In addition to reading intervention support, we are adding another layer and providing some added math intervention this term. I am looking to purchase a set of 10 Math Manipulative Toolboxes as well as a full set of Math in a Flash Discovery Cans. Both of these items will directly put tools into my students hamds. The Toolboxes will provide things like shapes, counters and rods to help establish number sense in my youngest students. My older students can use the same manipulatives to build on those skills as they use them to begin addition and subtraction. The Discovery Cans would allow me to further differentiate for my students. Having kindergarten through second grade special ed students, with both behavioral and academic needs means all my kids are at very different ability levels. Having these materials would enable all my students to access to some added support that the regular curriculum doesn’t provide. Many of my students have disabilities that impact their ability to access their regular class work. Some have processing disorders that limit their abilities to either access or retain knowledge. These tools will help them touch and feel their way through their math lessons. Instead of workbooks or computer images, they can touch, design and count their way through the lessons.
