These Classroom Calm Down Kits will allow me to better support each of our K-2 students, and teachers, in the continual process of emotion regulation. Every K-2 class will receive a Calm Down Kit, as well as an introductory lesson from me about the purpose of the box and appropriate ways to use it in the classroom. It is my goal that if/when students feel overcome with emotion or need to take a "brain break", they will be supported in doing so by utilizing any of the sensory items or prompts in the box. Each box will include multiple sensory items, playdough, a worry doll and a glitter (or mind) jar to assist with calming down. Additionally, each box will contain feeling faces and breathing prompts, as well as Post-it notes and colored pencils to help students communicate their needs to their teachers if needed. As young elementary schoolers, the process of emotion regulation is just beginning for our students, which makes it that much more important to support them in every way possible. I view these Classroom Calm Down Kits as an important, proactive step in supporting our students'  social-emotional and academic success. When students have a difficult time managing their emotions it often directly impacts their behavior and ability to learn in the classroom. I hope that by providing classroom teachers with Calm Down Kits such as these, they will feel as though they have more tools for their toolbox.
