  • Building Independent Learners

    Funded Oct 24, 2019

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to provide my students with the Montessori approach. Each student enjoyed learning through the materials provided.

I was able to create an area in my classroom that fosters the Montessori approach. This enabled my students to learn through self-directed activities, utilize hands-on learning and collaborative play.

My students were able to learn to be independent learners, it provided them with differentiated instruction and enabled them to learn at their own pace.

It was nice to be able to create an area in our classroom with baskets that have hands-on language arts and math activities. The students have been enjoying the activities such as alphabet puzzles, matching by color, number puzzles and stringing. The students have fun selecting an activity they can implement on their own. They are so proud of themselves when the activity is complete. This approach to learning has taught them to be responsible, organized and be able to follow directions.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Nagato

  • STEAM (STEM) Art Fun!

    Funded Dec 19, 2018

My students and I are so appreciative of all our STEM supplies and activities you all so generously provided to our class.

My students were so excited when I laid out all the art materials cut by the cricut machine. They create cards, leis and towers made from the boxes. It's so nice to see my students get so excited about STEAM. They are having so much fun that I think they don't even realize they are learning and developing their math skills and creativity skills.

Once they saw the planned out activities for art and shapes to create 3D shapes they immediately got their little hands into creating and building. To my surprise even being a young preschooler they were assembling 3D shapes. We heard lots of laughter and glue was everywhere. I was so happy to see my students being so creative and enjoying themselves.

You have created so many smiles and a love for STEM Art learning in my students.

My little preschoolers will keep on creating, building and learning through all the materials you provided our class. Maybe one day they will become an artist, educator or engineer.

    Thank you so very much!”

STEM Will Encourage Creativity and Excite Imaginations

My class loves to build.... Once they saw the LEGO DUPLO My First Animal Brick Box Building Blocks, Rising Star Interlocking Building Castle Blocks and other building toys they immediately started building. To my surprise even being a young as a preschooler they were putting the Lego's together that resembled animals, buildings, robots and cars. We heard lots of animal, robot and car sounds. I was so happy to see my students being so creative and enjoying themselves.

We are so appreciative of all our STEM activities you all so generously provided to our class.

My little engineers will keep on building and learning through all the materials you provided our class. Maybe one day they will become an engineer.

You have created so many smiles and a love for STEM learning.

    Thank you,

    Waiakea Elementary Preschool”

  • Bringing Physical Education in Doors Due to the Volcano

    Funded Jun 17, 2018

Fresh air with the Honeywell and fan blowing the clean air around the room has helped my students have clean air and especially students who have asthma be comfortable breathing within the classroom.

The plastic cone set, footprint mini accents, american educational, feet markers and spot markers has enabled me to create activities such as relay's and obstacle courses for my students to play and get their exercise within the classroom setting. When the students see the obstacle course set up they are so eager to get up and going. They are beginning to understand the concepts, improving on following directions and are starting to remember the order of the obstacle courses created for them. Their faces are so excited and light up whenever they see it set up.

The prize at the end of the obstacle course is to play with the construction toys vehicles set. Students wait until all their friends finish the obstacle course, they cheer for their friends as they finish and then all wait eagerly to play with the vehicles.

My students enjoy doing crafts they have made from the construction paper.

Having a plastic storage has helped us to keep the all out equipment organized.

Our class would like to express our gratitude for you have provided for us with a clean comfortable place to have fun and play within our classroom, setting.

Thank you for providing us with all these fabulous items. We can't thank you all enough.

We so far had two weeks of school prior to Hurricane Lane coming to Hawaii.

Soon after writing this thank you letter (approximately having two weeks of school), Hurricane Lane came to Hawaii (Big Island) and my classroom was totally flooded. The Carpet was drenched and on the tile there was two inches of water. It smelled terrible and there was a lot of dampness. I believe my classroom had the most damage in my school. I will not find out what will happen to my classroom until sometime in the next few weeks. Water destroyed some of the donors choose items such as the construction paper (it is damp) and Honeywell True HEPA Allergen Remover. I'll need to wash out the cones, tubs, building blocks etc. before the students can use them again. Other items such as the carpet, my personal iPod and speaker, pocket charts, school and personal purchased furniture and other items have water damage and are unusable. We had to discard many of the furniture that created my centers such as center, fine motor center, block center etc. We worked through the weekend to clean out my classroom and were able to move to another classroom but with minimal items. I needed to pack up many of the donors choose items and most of the other classroom items so I am not sure when we will be able to access them again. The timeline to return to my classroom ranges from 2 months to maybe January depending on the damage to the flooring and walls. Unfortunately, I was not able to take any pictures and the thank you's created by the students are damp by the water in the classroom.

Please know that I am very thankful and grateful for your donations to the classroom and that the students were able to use the items until Hurricane Lane came to Hawaii.”

  • Keeping Active Indoors Due to the Volcano

    Funded Jun 19, 2018

I wish you could have seen my students faces when they first saw the sports time climber and play tent tunnel pop up. Their eyes light up, faces all with big smiles, they were jumping up and down and clapping their hands with excitement. They all went over immediately and started to climb on the slide and crawl into the tunnel throwing balls up into the air.

When I introduced the outdoors playhouse and ultimate play kitchen they went in and out of the playhouse, pretended like they were cooking like their mom and dad and were all smiles.

Thank you so much for giving us this alternative to playing outdoors due the situation with the volcano. The students wait daily to play with their indoor recess toys. Most of my students are non-verbal and have not really requested for items until we introduced the indoor play equipment. Now they are now requesting to play with the indoor play equipment by pointing and are starting to request other items within the classroom setting. This project has created a safe place for my students to play and has made an impact on creating a bridge for my students to communicate non-verbally. This is so exciting.

Thank you for providing us with all these fabulous items. We can't thank you all enough.

I would like to create a physical environment that helps meet the educational and behavioral needs of individuals with autism or developmental delays. Very young children or children who have trouble understanding language would also benefit from some of these strategies. However, it is helpful to have knowledge of some common strategies that have been shown to make a positive difference, specifically in the areas of focus and following directions or routines. A distraction free and structured/predictable environment is most conducive to learning and behavior for kids who can become easily distracted, overwhelmed by too much input, have visual perceptual difficulties (e.g., may have trouble visualizing where they are supposed to sit, where their area is in the room is), or kids who have trouble understanding what is expected when given verbal directions (such as those with difficulty processing language). Students with autism or developmental delays can become overwhelmed or overstimulated when presented with too much visual and tactile (things you can touch) information. so it is important to keep the environment as clutter free as you can. Try to have a specific place for things (e.g., toys in a bin, papers and pens in a drawer, etc.) Closed containers on shelves, can be helpful to not be distracted. Keeping materials in book shelves in closed labeled bins, in a certain area of the room (as mentioned above). Label the bins with words and pictures. Have a schedule, written and visual, to allow students to know when they will be using the different areas and what they will be doing throughout the day, and refer to the schedule as your students move through different activities. One way to visually define a student’s space is to use cushions or mats when sitting on the carpet.
