Truly understanding pH is key to understanding many of the complex biochemical reactions that control our bodies and the living world around us. A classroom set of pH sensors will aid in the development of each student's understanding of pH and the function of biological systems. Students in all of my classes measure changes in pH for a number of different laboratory activities that we conduct throughout the year. For example, my Honors Biology students test the pH of different household substances and examine the effect of buffers in mediating pH swings, while my AP Biology classes measure pH changes to determine rates of photosynthesis and cellular respiration, and how those processes can differ following to changes in environmental conditions. The pH meters will also facilitate experiments to improve my students' understanding of the changes that are happening in our aquatic environments with increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. Being able to use sensitive pH meters to precisely measure pH changes throughout the laboratory exercises that they are conducting will allow my students to see real-time pH changes and will help bring to life the biological concepts that we are studying. These pH sensors will let students to measure pH with much greater precision and accuracy than they have been able to using colorimetric indicators and pH test strips. In addition, my students will be able to observe changes much more frequently at multiple points throughout the experiments, facilitating a more holistic understanding of the biological process at hand. Finally, I would love the opportunity to help my students feel like "real" scientists and become comfortable using more complex scientific instrumentation similar to what they may find in a university or corporate laboratory. When my students feel like real scientists, there is no stopping them!
