My goal is to increase reading comprehension through a variety of sources including technology, leveled chapter books, and flexible seating that will help each student fully engage in their reading material. Flexible seating, gives students’ options where they have very little throughout the day in the curriculum they must learn. Students who can focus, and sit in a seat that is best suited for them, will feel more comfortable and willing to partake in the activity and be excited about it.
The seating options in my room are limited. My classroom has rows of desks and a library with two worn out bean bags. For health reasons, I want to replace the bean bags with seating that can be wiped off and disinfected properly. Research has shown that teachers need to be able to move around the classroom to most effectively reach all students, but in my room, this is rather difficult. Adding flexible seating, adds to my options and my students’ options.
Leveled chapter books will allow me to target the specific needs of each student and allow my students to accomplish reading goals. If students understand the book, they can write about the book. Students reading chapter books aligned with state standards at his or her reading level will have a better chance of success in third grade. If they can "read" the book, he or she will have a better chance of understanding it, will be able to talk about it, and finally write about it.
In addition to the flexible seating and leveled chapter books, computer mice will help my students with computer manipulation and help them focus on the “test” or “lesson” instead of concentrating solely on how to manipulate the computer with their small fingers and hands.
