My students often arrive in Kindergarten lacking hand-eye coordination. Our district testing program is Smarty Ants. The learning games are timed and require good hand-eye coordination for an optimal score. Oftentimes, a kiddo scores low because they cannot make the mouse click in time. They lack exposure to a mouse click (due to time spent on iPads and phones) and cannot coordinate clicking fingers and sliding a mouse at the same time. Upon assessment, the kiddos appear to be low achievers and get easily discouraged. In actuality, these kids are very bright and just lack exposure to some technological features. Our district does not fund touch devices for the early childhood grades.
