Air Quality Sensors - Testing Asthma Alley
Funded Dec 2, 2020My students absolutely loved the new resources! We used the arduinos to monitor different rooms and their air quality. The students were able to create cases to keep them safe using tinkercad. They were able to collect data on thingspeak. Then, they were able to write up scientific reports on the data they collected.
When they first saw the materials we were remote - so this was all on zoom initially. However, they had experienced them a bit in person back in November as we had some in the classroom as well. They were able to make connections between what was taught to them on tinkercad and what the arduinos were capable of physically. It was a great experience for them!
We plan to continue using these arduinos next year. We want to continue monitoring air quality in and around our school; we want to also monitor the air quality in our neighborhood. We hope to continue the work and share it within our community to push for clean air. If you wish to learn more, please read up on the SIGH act in NY and see what work is being done at the statewide level. We want to continue to support the sSIGH act and hopefully our data will do just that!”

Funded Mar 19, 2019Thank you so much to contributing to my students' project. They were so excited to participate in creating it as well, and were so proud of the fact that they helped fund it. The girls that helped participate in writing the proposal are all English language learners, so I feel like working on this project helped them to advocate for things they want, work on their English language skills, and actively participate in their community as positive agents of change.
Their joy in un-boxing the new net and volleyballs was both intoxicating and uplifting. They did the un-boxing on a Friday afternoon in my classroom, after school had ended. Their smiles were ear to ear and they were so excited that they ran to show their coach, who has a classroom on the first floor. It was a great way to end the week!
Now that they have an intact net, they have been able to practice more consistently and correctly. Before their net was so broken apart that they had to tape it to the wall; obviously it would not stay tight and it was not the same as a game would be. Being able to use the net correctly now will have a big difference on how they play, as well as their morale. Thanks a bunch!”

Funded Nov 13, 2018Thank you so much for providing computers for our classroom. We are about to undertake our PBAT this spring. It requires conducting an independent science experiment and look at NASA climate data to investigate how climate change has impacted a city recently.
Having laptops available every single day in my classroom is beneficial for a handful of reasons. One is we hopefully not run out of laptops when we reserve computer carts. At my school , the computers come in carts of 24, but our classes tend to have 30-34 students scheduled. Having extra computers to work with allows me to ensure that all of the students have a computer that day and do not need to share. This is extremely important when we begin to write up our final reports at the end of the school year.
Some students really like the particular laptops that you provided. Recently we decorated them with science themed stickers and labeled them with my name and classroom. Also, I have been able to use them at times when students need to make up work on a particular day and I do not have a laptop cart in my room. Having a few available always is very helpful. Thanks again!”

Funded Sep 14, 2018Thank you so much for your generosity and kindness this school year. My students are thankful for access to these goods. We have created small care packages for students that we know are in needs, and have a reserve in our supply closet for students that may demonstrate need during the school year.
The students that received the care packages were very thankful for the supplies. Hugs were given and there was a great deal of gratitude displayed. I would love to be able to take my students gratitude and and push them to pay it forward in ways that they can; for example doing community service in our neighborhood. Thank you so much for everything.”

Funded Sep 17, 2018Thank you so much for helping to fund this project. I Un-boxed this project on Friday with the help of some students from our student council. Our jaws dropped to the floor with the overwhelming amount of supplies we have procured! The members from our student council plan to make mini care packages for our 300 students. Additionally, some supplies will be passed out to teachers so that they can also have an area in the room of supplies readily available for student use.
My students and I are very thankful for your generosity and kindness. You are helping to pave the road to success with your donation.”

Funded Jul 5, 2018Thank you so much for the new resources for my science classroom. We have successfully put both planting towers and three hanging planters throughout the classroom. Each year we have a community service day. Kids generally go out of the building to do community service in the neighborhood, but several students are not permitted / forget permission slips. That particular day, I created a part of the agenda around beautification of the school. They were given the planters, soil, and an assortment of seeds. They were left to inquire what types of seeds they expect to grow indoors. They planted the seeds and are in the process of figuring out what will grow, and will eventually try to plant a few other things as well.
The students are very excited about planting in the classroom. It adds some beauty to the room as well. We will continue to revisit the growth at various intervals, measuring heights and taking quantitative data such as health of the plants. From there, the students will investigate what else to plant, what not to plant again, and what other materials we could use to improve growth. For example, I am hoping to fund an LED light in the near future. Thank you so much for helping us get this project off the ground!”
