Students need to have the correct tools in order to be successful. Currently, we do not have the budget to provide each student their own novel during class. It is very important for students to have their own novel in order to read independently. The most critical skill for success in school or in life is the ability to read well. Reading is the only way to build usable vocabulary because in books, words are written in a context, with meaning and nuance. It only makes sense that students are more likely to engage when they have some ownership in the reading process. Students are also more likely to want to share what they learn with their classmates and gain a desire to know more about the topic they chose. Giving students an opportunity to discuss their chosen reading material can help reinforce what they learned. Research shows students who read independently become better readers, score higher on achievement tests in all subject areas and have greater content knowledge than those who do not.
