Diverse learners flood the doors of Starbucks (or any quiet cafe) daily to work while sitting in one of the comfy chairs/couches or spreading out their materials at a bistro table. If you or someone you know finds comfort in this type of environment, then it's probably because its an environment conducive to focus and productivity. These flexible seating options will help create the same inviting, comfortable, and productive environment felt in your local Starbucks. In middle school, young adolescents are at their highest physical, cognitive, social, and emotional growth rate. As a part of this rapid development, students learn best when they are involved in a student-led, collaborative, and engaging learning environment. Flexible seating options will accommodate their need to move, make choices, and stay engaged. For example, these cushions and seats will accommodate students’ need to stay moving and lead to greater focus. This environment will facilitate student responsibility, motivation, and ownership of their own learning. With the help of flexible seating, students will learn more about themselves: their learning style, their goals, and their strengths. Students will choose which flexible seating tool works best for them. One student might choose to prop up against a backrest pillow with their novel. Whereas, another student may choose a floor cushion by a table to illustrate in their reading notebook. These tools will provide my students with opportunities to collaborate with one another. For example, students will be able to pull up these seats next to one another for a book club meeting or spread out their materials to complete their best project yet!
