  • Flexible Seating Options for First Graders

    Funded Jan 13, 2025

Class 1-228 is filled with happy learners loving their new flexible seats! It was so special to see their excitement when the boxes were delivered to our classroom! Students were thrilled to see so many different kinds of flexible seating for our classroom.

Every day students are so eager to grab a comfortable cushion, wobbly stool, or humongous bean bag and begin the important work in first grade! The flexible seating you have donated to my class has been enjoyed by all students! They have even placed the round cushions on their assigned seats to make them more comfortable!

We are so deeply appreciative of your kindness. Your donation is used every day and my class talks about your thoughtfulness among themselves as well as with other teachers and students who visit our classroom and comment on our flexible seating!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rikala

  • Nonfiction Books Motivate Readers!

    Funded Jan 13, 2022

Thank you so much for your extremely generous donation of books to our classroom! Our students were ecstatic opening the packages and discovering the wonderful surprises! Students read with their reading partners and in small groups to become experts on a chosen animal. Then they shared their animal knowledge with other students. Our class learned so many fascinating facts about many different animals! One of the important facts we learned was how animals around the world need our help and protection. Some of the books shared ideas about different ways we can help animals, too.

With the information we learned from our new nonfiction books, we created a "Protect Our Planet" project. We identified problems in our environment and then we worked together to identify solutions to make the world a better place for people, plants, and animals. Students used the information they learned from their reading to write about environmental problems and solutions.

Thank you again for your generosity! Not only does my current class LOVE these nonfiction books and rereads them often, I know my future students will love them just as much!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rikala

  • Remarkable Readers Require Resources...Books, Books, and More Books!

    Funded Jan 4, 2022

Your generous donation has greatly impacted our classroom! Our library is bursting with engaging books that our students are eager to read! They are thrilled to go book shopping in our classroom library and they deliberately seek out the new books that have been donated!

Our students are emergent readers and should read at least 15 books every week. Prior to your donation, their options were limited. We did not have an abundance of lower level books for our emergent readers. Thanks to your generosity and kindness, our students now have book baggies filled with books on their independent reading levels. In addition, the books have characters they can relate to and identify with. Our students especially love to read the Disney books and books with superheroes!

During our reading block, we now have books students can read with their reading partners. They are practicing their reading strategies and participating in book conversations with their peers. In addition, students are working together to take sneak peeks, figure out tricky words, and practice their reading fluency.

Our classroom is a better place thanks to your generous donation!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rikala

This classroom project was brought to life by Paul Hastings LLP and one other donor.
Many students were remote last year and this is their first experience in a school building. Although technology is a great resource with an abundance of books, students need books to hold in their hands. They are learning to turn pages and track words with their special reading finger. Our students also enjoy bringing home books to read with their families! Emergent readers need high interest, engaging books with characters who look like them! Our students love to book shop in our classroom library, but there isn't enough lower level books for them to enjoy reading. We want our students to develop a love of reading and an interest in books at a young age!
