My students can use the 2 5-shelf bookcases for our classroom library. They will use the other 6 2-shelf bookcases for their library by subjects in order to incorporate reading across the curriculum to build fluency at all time. The bookcases will be used as our library display shelves. This area is one of the main focuses of our classroom and something that is used everyday by every single one of my students as well as for a display of our math and literacy stations. Each weekend, I secretly replace the books on the back table and watch the excitement as my 1st graders walk-in to discover new books. Having these bookcases will allow me to give each subject its own area and make the books easily accessible for my students for each subject area. Many times our bookshelves match our science or social studies focus, other times I pull the books for specific comprehension mini-lessons, and other times, they are just-for-fun books. A library display shelf is the perfect chance to expose students to books that they might not normally pick-up on their own or might not be able to read on their own. Placing these books on their own shelf inherently adds value to them and tells students – “ The correction tape can be used by the students to help them keep their work nice, neat and clean without having torn papers as a result of too much erasing.The retractable pens can be a tool used in the writing center to encourage and motivate students that want to write. The pencils will help my students complete their assignments and focus without the constant need to sharpen their pencils. students assigned to each shelf.
