Reading seems like an easy skill, right? In reality, it is rocket science! Our state has unrolled a literacy initiative to bridge the reading gap in Arkansas. Many of these tools will be used in the explicit instruction of reading foundational skills. Students will use toobaloos as they independently browse through books in their browsing box, which is filled with books and resources. The toobaloo helps students hear themselves as they read and articulate. They will do this daily during the school year. As they progress, more books will be added to their browsing box. Another literacy tool that will be used in small group instruction are the LCD electronic writing tablets. These tablets allow students to practice letter recognition, paths of motion, writing, and decoding. They are simple to use and require no markers, erasers, or mess. My small groups will also use playdoh in literacy instruction. Students use the playdoh to create letters and words. It allows students to have a tactile learning experience. Last, I love for my students to be comfortable in my classroom. I have a small variety of flexible seating in my classroom. I would love to use the donut balls as an additional option for flexible seating. I can picture my students curling up in the donut ball and reading a book.
