  • Please Provide Lab Tools For Chemistry Students To Investigate Electrochemistry

    Funded Jun 12, 2022

    Thank you so much for your generous donations for electrochemistry labs. Originally, this grant request was for a Hoffman Apparatus - that is used to electrolyze water - but unfortunately the suppliers were out of stock with a long backorder. So Donorschoose asked me to pick some other related items.

    As you will see in the photos, we purchased equipment to make "batteries" from metals and chemical solutions (We received Leyden Jar, electrochemical cells with porous cups, metal strips and some beakers). My students are extremely motivated and excited for these electrochemistry labs. Now, I will plan to get even more of these cells so that there are enough for all my students in class to work together simultaneously. In these basic beginner labs, students are measuring the different voltages that can be produced between two different metals - like iron, copper, zinc, lead, tin, and magnesium strips.

    Students were excited to see that they could produce electricity from metals and chemical solutions. They observed the different ranges of voltages that could be produced from different combinations of metals.

  • Please Expand Our Science Lab Technology To Reach More Students

    Funded Jun 28, 2023

    We greatly appreciate your donations to purchase computer probes for my Chemistry students to measure pH and temperature. We have performed several titration experiments this year (namely mixing acids and bases) and the probes, along with the Vernier equipment, makes it easy to read and collect the data.

    Students can focus on data and analyzing data instead of on taking long times trying to read calibrations or to interpret pH color charts on older traditional equipment. For examples, in an acid base titration, the students have performed experiments to analyze and identify an unknown solid acid (by finding its molar mass). Also students have determined the concentration of unknown solutions (standardizing solutions) by using the pH meters along with the traditional colored indicators too (its still fun to see the color changes in a lab).

  • Please Help Provide An Electronic Balance for Our Chemistry Lab

    Thank you again for your generous contributions. Because of your gifts, our students of Chemistry and Physics are enjoying an updated, modernized science lab experience.

    The electronic balances that you provided for us are great. These are the best digital balances I have ever used so far in my 20+ years of teaching Chemistry. Also these have the capability to connect to computer via the Vernier interfaces that other donors have made possible for us. We discovered that we will also need some cables for that to happen, but I am working on that right now.

    These balances are useful in our Chemistry labs like 1) Determining the chemical formula of an unknown compound (empirical formula) 2) Determining the molar mass (and molecular formula) of an unknown gas 3) Determining the chemical mass (and identity) of an unknown solid acid (we used aspirin in our experiment).

    My students are truly enjoying the technology- I have several students who gladly volunteer to help me set up and clean up the equipment for our lab experiments.

    We greatly appreciate your donations. Thanks to your giving, modern digital scales and computer technology is now becoming a reality in our science lab classroom. We currently have enough equipment to supply about 15 students with a new electronic balance. Now, in the next year, we hope to continue to expand each lab station by purchasing more balances (hopefully up to 4 more).
