Better Mental Health Through Books!
Funded Oct 1, 2024Thanks to a quick and generous donation, we were able to purchase books focusing on mental health, a critical need in our community today. We were able to buy a variety of fiction, non-fiction, self-help, poetry, and short story anthologies to best serve the diverse needs and interests of our readers.
The biggest surprise from all of this was that a teacher came in and was awestruck with one of the books. SHE WAS THE AUTHOR, writing under a pseudonym, and because the subject was mental health, which is touchy with some families, she hadn't publicized it widely that she wrote the book.
I've since been able to use the books in a number of displays and features, such as "Celebrating Black Authors", "New Year's Resolutions", "Short Story Roulette", to name a few. The pictures are of two of our displays, first our "New Books" ledge that you see as soon as you walk into the library, the second, a screenshot of our #unboxing #newbooks Instagram reel.”

Funded Nov 13, 2024I can't believe my project was funded so quickly! If you follow my school social media on Instagram @nph_library , I will post student projects there!
I am always blown away by the speed in which things are funded. I am humbled beyond words, and will keep my eyes open for ways to support you and your projects.”

Funded Jun 25, 2024Since we have gotten the signage for the library, we have used it in a bunch of rotating displays. Books on display always get more checkouts than regular books. We use the magnetic whiteboard easel for magnetic poetry on the back, announcements for library events and contests on the front.
The marquee lights are fun and bring an updated vibe to the library, plus, it saves on the paper we used to use to make posters for the displays. It saves time because I can ask my student assistants to change out signs instead of me having to hop onto Canva and design, print, and mount them each time.
Thank you again for breathing new life into our library!”

Refill Our STEM Workspace!
Funded Nov 8, 2023Thank you so much for refilling our workspace! We've had great luck with grants over the past couple of years, but those consumables and refills will get you every time! Having donors like you help the school out allows us to spend more on books and new items, so we aren't spending our entire budget on unglamorous items, like tape.
Being in Alaska, there are not a lot of places to comparison shop for the best deals and a lot of vendors have exorbitant shipping costs. DonorsChoose has really streamlined the procurement process so we don't have to worry about that kind of stuff, we can filter easily and some places that default to really expensive Alaska shipping seem to have some sweet deals with DonorsChoose when we buy curated through them!
Thank you again for helping to refill our STEM supplies and work area. This models sustainability and reduces waste, as we continue to get another year out of those purchases from previous school years.”

Funded Sep 20, 2023Having a new large TV has made such a big difference ! Our current one is a 32" wall mounted TV in a corner, which has made viewing with classes difficult. This big 70" can be seen by everyone in the room and is able to be placed in a more central location, so we accommodate more student at once.
When I am not using it to teach classes, I run a slideshow of all the school activities photos. Students love seeing themselves on the big screen and flock to the library the day after a big game to see all the action shots!
Screens with significantly alterable settings help with students with vision problems and allow us to tweak subpar images for better viewing comfort and contrast. This screen has really just leveled up the quality of how we use imaging in the library!”

Funded Aug 2, 2023You did it! Our kids can now practice with professional tools that will inspire them to level up their communication skills!!! The bonus to this is that staff could also use this if we ever had to go remote again, or to just create flipped classroom resources to augment in person learning.”

Funded May 4, 2022Our new studio has giant windows, so everyone has been watching as the studio you helped to fund takes shape! With so many students being content consumers of social media, we at the Ben Eielson Jr./Sr. High School Library were thrilled to be able to share industry standard creation tools with them to help inspire them to create the type of content they love to consume.
We started small, doing podcasts with the built-in laptop microphones and recording video on people's personal cameras, but now we've been able to dabble with picture-in-picture recording, audio mixing, and professional lighting and sound! With so many different, interchangeable parts, many groups can work independently on projects for both school and personal projects.
The best thing is being able to do a take on a phone, it be ok, and then do a final take in studio with all the best equipment! They can really see the difference that professional tools make and I hope it will inspire them to become creators instead of just consumers. We've taken "class presentations" to a new level by leveraging real-world technology. It has energized the classrooms and inspired a new generation of would-be vloggers and podcasters! Our students have great ideas and now they can share them in a professional and polished way. I can't wait to see what they'll share next!”
