  • Equipment for Enhanced Team Workouts

    Funded May 7, 2017

The JV and Varsity basketball seasons have just begun. Our teams were grateful to receive the new workout equipment and it was put to immediate use during the spring, summer, and fall workouts. We designed station work outside the gym that included the weights, jump ropes, hurdles, and medicine balls. Student athletes improved their conditioning and learned proper techniques while training.

In the past our student athletes haven't been able to choose from a variety of weights and often had bad form because of this. It really helped stations move smoothly even with 20+ athletes in the weight room at one time. Our athletes really enjoy the Wilson Evolution balls and it's always the first choice when they run to the ball crate to choose a ball!

Our next steps with the workout gear is to continue physical training 2 to 3 times during the regular basketball season before time (winter). We will be using the basketballs every day in practice and games. We have a locked storage closet in the weight room to keep these materials secure and plan to continue workouts next off-season. Thank you so much. You are truly part of the Cardinal basketball family!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Warren

  • Hoops, Health, And Hard Work!

    Funded Jul 30, 2015

Our basketball season has been a huge success thanks to hard work and support. We have been using the basketballs in practices and games this season. We were able to replace our basketball hoops with new nets. For away games, we are able to split the carry load into two large bags, and bring all our supplies on the subway, bus, and long walks. This commute time can reach over an hour. We use the pump to keep balls inflated and the netted bags are used to bring balls from the downstairs storage closet up for practices. This has made our practices, travel, and away games more efficient and seamless.

Our season has been a huge success. We have seen multiple student athletes raise their GPAs over 10 points during the season. We continue to hold study halls before practice, and execute a personalize intervention plan for student athletes who are struggling. We are seeing positive end results by really working on the process of daily habits and incremental improvement.

Our team has focused on teamwork, mental toughness, perseverance, and sacrifice. We went 12-0 in league competition and now will play in the city playoffs. Thank you so much for your generosity and support through Donor's Choose. You are truly a part of our team.”

  • Hoops And Hard Work!

    Funded Oct 21, 2014

"Hoops for Hard Work!" has been in full effect for a few months now, and the work continues. We are wrapping up our second successful season. Student athletes participated in daily study halls, practices, workouts, and games.

The new basketballs helped us run practices smoothly at multiple baskets. The weighted balls and jump ropes were an integral part in helping students get in shape during the season. The ball locker has kept everything safe, since we share a closet with 8 other teams and over 2,000 students. The materials are being used by all three basketball teams and students who attend open gym Saturdays. The materials are still in great condition and will definitely be used throughout this year and next.

I am proud to say that our student athletes improved their GPA in each of the last three marking periods, had 90%+ attendance to school, and posted a 17-4 overall team record. Thank you so much for contributing to our success.”

  • Help Us Use Hoops To Build Habits Of Work

    Funded Nov 2, 2013

We received all the supplies for the start of the season, and it made a huge impact! We tripled the amount of basketballs available which helped us run organized practices. The ladders and weighted balls helped the student athletes get in shape and improve agility. The nets for our rims were replaced twice. The ball cage was used at every practice and it was locked away for safe storage. Our practice jerseys made it possible to run scrimmages, and ramp up the competition level.

Throughout the season, we met several times a week for study hall where students met with coaches, completed homework, and set goals. The student athletes increased their collected GPA by 6 points during the season. Every player had over 90% attendance at school, with no failing classes. We practiced on Saturdays, during vacation, and nearly every weekday. The student athletes really learned what is takes to balance multiple responsibilities and work hard on the court and in the classroom. They persevered through the ups and downs of the season, and were eager to push themselves to new heights. We are so thankful to receive the supplies, and they will continue to be used year after year as we build the basketball program.”

  • Whiteboard Wishes

    Funded May 24, 2011

The dry erase white boards have completely changed the classroom make up this year. The students don't have to deal with the chalk dust, glare, and limits with colors. The dry erase board is organized daily to display crucial information for each lesson.

Students summarize their group work on the dry erase board, and enjoy using the markers and various colors to display work. Visually, it is more appealing, and students in the back of the classroom can easily read the board. Students gain a sense of ownership when they can complete a problem in front of others, explain it, and justify their work.

I have use magnets, tape, and the mix of colors to organize announcements, assignments, and recent handouts. Our classroom is bright, clean, organized, and welcoming for our math students.”

  • Multimedia Math!

    Funded Aug 19, 2011

This laptop has made a huge impact on instruction and learning in math class every day. The laptop can be connected to the Smart Board where students learn visually with graphs, displays, and through electronic marker writing. I also have installed the TI-83 graphing program on the computer.

Students also use the laptop to check their Pupil Path which displays specific assignment information, grades, and transcripts. Many students don't have computers at home so it is crucial to have a classroom laptop.

Students are challenged with online Math games and manipulatives that can be shown over the Smart Board to the entire class or worked on individually. Students come to the classroom during their lunch period or after school to use the laptop. We plan on continuing the work through the second semester by doing a project with Microsoft Excel and Linear Equations. The laptop will be necessary to complete this project, and we look forward to using it in the future.”

  • Mechanics of Math

    Funded Dec 18, 2010

Thank you for donating to our Mechanics of Math Project. I have been distributing the mechanical pencils to all students over the last couple of months. Students can earn extra mechanical pencils by completing five homework's in a row. A class can earn extra pencils by working as a team and having the highest combined test scores.

The pencils have helped with efficiency, ownership of work, and as positive reinforcement. We don't have to use class time to sharpen pencils. Students also tend to feel better about their own work when they are using new supplies. We have been learning so much this year in our Math classroom, and your Foundation has improved our flow of knowledge on a daily basis.”

My students have to overcome many barriers to success (low income, special needs, language, inconsistent support). They work extremely hard inside and outside of school. The majority of students come from low income households and qualify for free lunch. I absolute love teaching, and my students surprise and inspire me daily. Due to the budget cuts schools are facing, our school is no longer able to personally give each student the resources they desire. Supplying my students with these materials would be a small step but it would give my students one less obstacle to overcome on their own.
