Students in my class require explicit instruction and prompting to carry out activities to completion and to organize their materials. Students vary in age from 5 to 10 years, which means that each child has a distinct set of learning goals per his or her developmental and ability levels and objectives set forth in his or her IEP. I plan to assign a specific color to each child in my class in order to empower students to take ownership of their learning. Each child will have a color-coded binder, IEP bin, and task box complete with their instructional materials, academic and behavioral data sheets, supplemental visuals and supports, and reinforcers. This system will ensure that students and staff members have easy access to required materials, which will increase student engagement while eliminating time spent looking for specific items and the possibility of students engaging in maladaptive behaviors due to wait time. Our staff will teach students to retrieve their materials at the beginning of the school day, locate their activity schedule, follow a set routine, and clean up and return their materials at the end of the day. Students also will be responsible for transporting their IEP bin to and from their assigned inclusion classroom.
