Our theme is Camp Read-a-Lot and we are asking for any kind of child sized camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags, folding chairs, fishing poles, etc) for us to create reading spaces, gift cards, stuffed animals, or anything children would enjoy. We will award any donations at the end of the camp to our top readers. These students (primarily from low-income neighborhoods) who have completed grades 1-5 have never been exposed to the great outdoors, been camping, fishing, etc. because of the low-income area they live in. We want to open the world up to them through reading and special "camping" related activities. Kids who read over the summer are more likely to leap ahead when they return to school. Kids who do not read over the summer experience something called the “summer slide.” The purpose of our camp is to improve students' reading ability by giving them the opportunity to hear stories, interact with others about what they've read, select books of interest, practice reading, and choose books to take home to keep.
