McKee HS MSK Big Sister Reading Project 2023
Funded Jan 5, 2024We are so grateful to everyone who donated to our project. My Sister's Keeper exists to help our young women feel empowered and make an impact on the world. By having these books, our high school girls are able to see that they serve a greater purpose.
These books open the doors to so many things for them:
-first and foremost, supporting and encouraging literacy among young/new readers
-building relationships with little children
-learning *patience* and kindness by being around little ones
-showing the little kids that women who look like them - women of color - are able to hold positions of power and have important and meaningful jobs
-leadership skills and responsibility
-CONFIDENCE!!!
We do one reading a month at the Richmond Pre-K and we have read/donated 3 of the books so far with 2 left to go. Ms. Davis, all the MSK girls and I really look forward to our monthly readings and we wouldn't be able to do it without your kind donations. Thank you again! Girls rule!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Jen Pecora
Help My Sister's Keeper Buy Books for Our Pre-K Students!
Funded Jan 15, 2023We can't thank you enough for your financial support in helping McKee's My Sister's Keeper group! We reached our goal and were able to purchase books for our monthly pre-k Big Sister readings. We have been reading to our pre-k kids since November and both the big kids and little kids have benefitted so much from it.
Here are some quotes from our girls and how they felt about our Big Sister reading project:
Ms. Pecora: I saw my students' confidence grow!
Ms. Davis: I loved witnessing the relationships between the MSK young ladies and Pre-K students flourish.
Ashley: I loved reading to the kids I think it is a fun way to encourage kids to read. Seeing the kids get excited when we came through the door made my day 😊
Brianna: I enjoyed the development of my understanding of the children in my class
Marlene: It helped me get to know more about myself and my community by being apart of it.
Mari: I believe this project has helped me be more social and has helped me have more patience with others.
Tanae: this project pushed me to have more patience and be aware of different people preferences and needs ❤️
