Learning how to read is pretty hard to do when you don't have books to be read. My students are so enthusiastic about learning to read and moving up reading levels. I would be testing their reading levels daily if it were up to them. It kills me to hear them ask for more books to read because I have to tell them we don't have anymore or that we don't have any for their new levels. I worry that their love for learning will gradually run out if I cannot get them the resources they need to keep learning and to keep them engaged. I have students in my classroom that are way far beyond the books that we have in our classroom, but I don't have books to keep pushing them to become even better readers. I am a first year teacher and am willing to do whatever I have to do to get my students the books and resources that they deserve. My only goal for the school year is to give my kids the tools that they need to go on and be successful in first grade. With my current resources, I don't feel confident enough to say that I can reach that goal. If I had the books, I am confident that I can get my entire class reading by the end of this current school year.
