I have students who currently stand near the rear of the room to work, and others who kneel on the hard tile flooring at their desk instead of sitting. Some students prefer to sit on the floor, however, they struggle because they have nowhere to put their materials, and no surface to write on other than the floor. Also, our one-size-fits-all student chairs do not always accommodate all students. With these new seating options, I am hoping to create a more comfortable, accepting, and accommodating environment where the students can choose which seating option best fits their specific needs. Our taller and more robust students who have expressed feeling awkward in their tiny chairs will be thrilled to sit in the larger, more accommodating, stools. The students who prefer to kneel will now have cushions to make their work space more comfortable. Our multiple students with ADD and ADHD will no longer get in trouble for making noise as they wiggle in their chair because they will have the inflatable chair options and sensory-stimulating inflatable seat cushions! The students who work better on the floor will love having the lap desks to hold their materials and provide a work surface. This flexible seating project will no doubt increase attentiveness and motivation. My students are so excited about the possibility of creating a fun and creative environment in which their learning styles are truly acknowledged and celebrated!
