  • East LA PE Necessities

    Funded May 3, 2024

    We are so grateful for your generous donations to our PE classes. The new nets look amazing on our basketball hoops and the pickle balls will get great use in our upcoming pickle ball unit. The speaker has been used every single day to promote and encourage more Physical activity in our classroom environment. The scholars have been so excited to request songs and artist during our different physical fitness activities. I have seen a huge change in their overall happiness and effort during our PE classes. We even got a chance to use it inside during the heat wave to watch McFarland USA which was a movie about running and applied well with our cardiovascular unit. The kids specifically said they felt like they were at the movie theater and that it helped them pay more attention and stay engaged while completing their worksheet during the film. Thank you so much for everything you have provided our scholars.”

  • Cozy Reading Corner

    These new books have been such a great addition to our classroom library. The variety of texts you've donated have allowed my students the opportunity to find a book and/or series they can really enjoy. I have noticed several of my students falling in love with Harry Potter and even the classic Hardy Boys collection. By enjoying what they're actually reading I am noticing a big improvement in their comprehension.

    My students engage in silent reading every morning. I think its a great for them to start their day reading a text of their choice before jumping into their content classes. I really enjoy watching them finish texts and successfully passing their AR quizzes to test how well they comprehended the book.

    One of my scholars just recently got into Goosebumps and I remember when I first discovered those great books at their age. I enjoy talking to them about the stories and thrills the books have brought them. So much fun watching my scholars grow their literacy skills and excitement for reading.”

    I have enjoyed watching my students fly through some popular series that you provided us with for example Dog Man, Diary of a wimpy kid, The last kids on earth, Captain Underpants, and so many more.

  • Diversifying Our Library

    The books you have donated to our classroom library have really made a difference. I have book options for everyone now. It's nice to be able to provide something interesting to read for each and every scholar.

    We even got a chance to talk and read about Kobe Bryant on the anniversary of his passing with all the books we got donated about him. The kids really enjoyed reading them together as a class.

    Series like The hunger Games, Divergent, and some great titles by Jason Reynolds have really brightened up the library and have given my scholars an opportunity to explore different authors and genres. Thank you so much again.”

  • East LA PE Essentials

    I cannot thank you enough for the items you have so generously donated to our PE Department. We desperately needed a new speaker, storage, and some new equipment.

    Our scholars are absolutely loving the new speaker for outdoor activities. I have really seen a change in the participation rate and effort when running outside and completing their circuit workouts. We have even used the speaker for a little karaoke fun at the end of class which the kids loved.

    The storage has been amazing. It so nice to be able to bring out the ball cart and let the kids choose a piece of equipment to play with. We now have the ability to lock the cart up so that the equipment is safely stored away and ready for use whenever we bring it out.

    Pickle ball has been a hit with the sixth graders. They ask me everyday if we are going to be practicing and/or playing pickle ball. Thank you so much again for everything.”

  • Dream Team

    My students have loved having access to these incredible series you have funded for them. They engage in reading every morning for for at least 30minutes. I have had several students read all the way through Harry Potter, Diary of a wimpy kid, Series of unfortunate events, and Percy Jackson. That being said the majority of my students have already reached their AR goal for the semester. I enjoyed watching them get excited about starting a new series and having the opportunity to be the first person to read a brand new book.

    I particularly think about one of my students who read the entire harry potter series in less than 2 months. If that series was not donated he would not have had the opportunity to experience the wizardry world of harry potter. He is only in 6th grade and had a 90% or higher on all of the AR test.

Our students spend at least 1 hour a day reading with me, and I want them to spend more time reading books they are interested in than looking through my library or lack thereof for something they may like. These series like Unfortunate Events and Harry Potter and others are all books they have requested. These books will allow my students to grow and build a love for reading over the course of the next three years. I know this is a lot to ask for but as you know we call our advisory the "Dream Team" and we like to dream big.
