100% of our students receive free-lunch and predominantly come from our school’s zip code, which has the highest crime and poverty rate of any zip code within the city of Indianapolis. The majority of our students come from backgrounds of mental, physical, & emotional trauma, and rely on the educational, financial, & emotional support of the school to meet their most basic needs. Providing a nurturing educational environment, along with offering positive academic and athletic opportunities outside of the classroom, help students escape many of the unnecessary hardships they are faced with at home. Most students are involved in some type of extracurricular activity, which shows the value of the additional supports offered beyond the school day. Because baseball requires a variety of gear and equipment, our players heavily rely on donations to fund the most basic needs of the game. Currently, our dilapidated protection screen, poses a danger to both players and coaches. Recently, a pitcher was hit in the face with a batted ball, which resulted from the screen’s poor condition. The ball went into the screen, but the screen flew backwards with the momentum from the ball. Fortunately, no serious injuries were sustained on this occasion. However, it has impacted participation and has limited our ability to throw live batting practice. With a screen like the one being requested, we can instill confidence that players and coaches will be safe when throwing batting practice.
