I would love to provide more opportunities for my students to engage in STEAM focused activities in our schools Pre-K through 2 STEAM lab. A pegboard wall, Lego Wall, and coding station would offer so many cool and creative ways for children to explore STEAM concepts! I will attach the pegboard to the wall at the children's height and then have some different themed materials available for them to explore with. One theme would be a marble run. In the buckets (hanging from the pegboard), I would provide marbles, tubing, PVC pipes and hooks so that the students could connect the materials to the pegboard and successfully move the marbles. I would similarly attach the lego build plates to the wall so that children can work through build challenges, create similar marble runs, work on fractions, engineer structures, and create through trial and error.
The themed walls in our STEAM lab will give students the opportunity to explore, create, and experiment. Coding has become a necessary skill set in the world, and students can start learning as young as preschool! Children will use the coding mice and cardboard mats that I design to work through coding challenges, such as getting the mice to gather food and then move to its shelter. Much like a game board, children will program the mouse to move the correct number of spaces in the correct order to complete each challenge. Likewise, students will engage in Ozobot Bit challenges as they design pathways for their Bits to travel and complete challenge cards they are given.
My students thrive in a classroom where they can create, explore, and innovate. These stations will give students varied experiences to problem solve and innovate in fun and engaging ways.
