Meeting Our Ancestors, Exploring Our History

Funded Mar 26, 2018

Finding your identity through experiences is important but so are the foundation aspects of ourselves; our ancestry. Students began exploring their results and some were surprised while some weren't. Some students are continuing to research their ancestry, language and traditions of their results.

Students were asking about the arrival of the DNA test kits for a few weeks until they finally came in! Once they arrived, students were very excited to begin the process of collecting their DNA. However, they did not realize the amount of time the DNA takes to be analyzed and sent and the questions of "when" continued. Finally, when students received their email with their results, they were very eager to tell the class about what they discovered.

Ancestry and cultural identity is so important. With all the distractions of the world, it is easy to forget who our ancestors were, what they did and how they survived in their time. Due to time constraints, we were not able to complete our unit for ancestry discovery! However, with a new group of incoming students, we plan to continue to explore our DNA and our history. At the end of the unit, students will present their findings in a whole classroom presentation and explain what the new discoveries made means for them.

On behalf of the 8th grade students (now freshmen!), we thank you for your generosity and support for our students and their education!”

With gratitude,

Mx. Torres
