One of the most important skills teachers can provide inner city youth with is the ability to engage with non-fiction text. Additionally, it is very important to provide students with 21st-century skills so that they are college and career ready. Teaching this life-long skill is even more challenging when students are not yet proficient in reading and writing. With the use of technology, our students are able to not only read articles and online texts about various non-fiction topics, they can also watch video clips and other presentations. Additionally, technology can provide access to the content, specifically for students who read below grade or have difficulty reading. While students are online listening to text, watching videos related to their non-fiction topic, typing /writing their reports, creating slide show presentations, teachers are working one on one with students providing targeted differentiated instruction. While this format is student centered and highly engaging, it is also quite loud without the use of headphones. With your donation, students will be more focused and less distracted by all of the great online research that is occurring in the classroom. Our teachers will be more efficient in their small group instruction, which will ultimately aid in the closing of the achievement gap.
