On behalf of the students I would like to thank you for your generous donations. I know that the students' learning experiences will be much more enjoyable because of your donation.

Additionally, I would like to thank you for making my own teaching experience more enjoyable. The proper tools make my lessons more effective and efficient which makes my job more rewarding.”

  • Digital Access for Science Learners

    Funded Aug 31, 2019

The Chromebooks purchased through your donations have made the overall learning environment in my classroom more fun and engaging. At the same time, they have made teaching my courses more efficient and cost-effective.

The Chromebooks, obtained through DonorsChoose, have been employed for activities that are more engaging for students than the traditional classroom setting. In my Chemistry classes, we use Kahoot, an online learning game, to help students memorize ions that are not easily predicted. My students had a blast playing the game and learned at the same time. In biology we have used the chromebooks to research food webs and then use real world data do investigate the 10% rule. We will also use them to compare DNA sequences and build cladograms. The Chromebooks have also been used in Anatomy and Physiology to play Anatomy Arcade games that helped them master the names and functions anatomical structures. The examples above are just a few of the ways the Chromebooks purchased through DonorsChoose with your donations have advanced learning in my classroom.

As mentioned above, the Chromebooks are streamlining the learning process in my classroom. When using the Chromebooks for tests and quizzes I can see in real time which concepts students have learned well and which ones they haven't learned well. Such data allows me to more efficiently choose topics I need to spend time remediating. Also, by using the Chromebooks for tests and quizzes, I have been able to cut down my classes operational costs as well as save a few trees.

Overall, the Chromebooks have been a boon to my classroom. As such, I cannot thank all of you who have donated to my projects enough! It is encouraging to know that their people and companies are still excited about our younger generation's education and future.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. DeRennaux

  • Getting Students Stuck on Learning in the Web

    Funded Mar 8, 2018

I can't thank all the Donors to this project enough you for your help! Donors for this project included Verizon, The Foundation for Oklahoma City Public Schools, and generous anonymous donors.

The Chromebooks purchased with your donations were instrumental in helping students prepare for their state standardized science exam. Using a diagnostic online tutorial program, students quickly identified their content deficiencies. Then students corrected their content deficiencies using targeted tutorials (from both the program and teacher), games, and mastery tests prescribed by the online tutorial. As a result, student felt more confident taking the state standardized science exam.

I also used the Chromebooks, obtained through DonorsChoose, for additional learning activities. In Chemistry, my students used the Chromebooks to view the 3-dimensional structure of various molecules and then relate their structure to function. Additionally, my Anatomy and Physiology students used Anatomy Arcade to master the names and functions anatomical structures. The above are just a few of the ways the Chromebooks purchased through DonorsChoose have advanced learning in my classroom.

Overall, the Chromebooks have greatly helped me engage my students to learn required content. The students have also been very excited about the new learning venues offered to them.”

    Mr. DeRennaux

The Chromebooks requested in this Donors Choose will complete my classroom set and have the potential to greatly expand science students’ educational experience here at HFAA. For example, publically available scientific reference materials and scientific modeling applications are increasingly available online. Such examples include PubMed, Gene, and ChemBank. Teaching students how to navigate and utilize such databases and modeling programs will greatly increase students’ access to credible and current information that students can use to answer many scientific questions. Obtaining the Chromebooks will also give students access to a plethora interactive digital tutorials and learning games that connect with all students’ learning styles. For example, there are many tutorial animations that can bring life complex processes such as DNA replication, transcription, and translation. Games accessible through Anatomy Arcade make the monotony of memorizing anatomical body parts fun and exciting. Thus, in conjunction with expert teacher instruction, hands-on labs, the animations along with endless content summaries and self-testing found on online tutorials, and the excitement of learning games, the Chromebooks will greatly brighten our student learning. The examples above as to how obtaining Chromebooks will facilitate learning science are a few of many. Just as important as the books are to the science learning process is the realization that the world is increasingly going digital. The digital age will require student computer literacy to compete for jobs in the future. As such, having a classroom set of Chromebooks to be shared between our science departments would greatly facilitate student competitiveness as students would get early practice with applications used regularly in college and the business world.
