Flexible seating has become more and more popular over the last couple of years. Our 21st century students needs continue to change, the population in which we serve continues to become more diverse, and the learning styles of students are ever changing. By providing flexible seating within the classroom, it will provide additional resources for students to become comfortable in their learning environment. Once students have become comfortable, they will feel "ready to learn". By adding a variety of different seating options, it can help students focus better on the lesson and it will provide them with choices. Our current classroom does not provide this option.
I believe by providing these additional seating options, the students will have differentiated learning benefits, but will also enhance their physical health, support their sensory input, and will give them choices about their physical classroom space, which will require higher-order thinking skills.
I have chosen 17" wiggle stools and a ball chair that will support physical health, such as children who need to wobble, rock, bounce, lean, or stand. All of these increase oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow, and core strength. It will help keep young minds more alert and focused. I also chose seats that are comfortable. An uncomfortable student is distracted and unproductive. I chose comfy floor seats, a small coach, and a lounger to provide comfort and calming solutions. These are great places for students to listen to me read, get engaged in a lesson, or sit and read independently or with a friend. By providing comfortable seating options, it encourages students to stay calm, focused, and productive.
I am looking forward to continuing to build a student-centered classroom that supports student learning and promotes higher order thinking.
