The students in our community in Maben, Mississippi are almost all white, Protestant children. That being said, this community severely lacks diversity. Most of the members of this community will never leave this community, so one of the very few opportunities to be exposed to other cultures and experiences is in the classroom. My goal within my classroom is to create a safe learning environment in which I can promote and inspire empathy for other children around the world. I think the best way to accomplish this is to use literature, like Sold and Four Perfect Pebbles, to educate the students about different cultures by exploring literature written about children of the same age, but who are of different cultures and ethnicities. The most important part of this project is to not only teach my students about different cultures, but also to inspire a sense of responsibility to be good people when they depart the classroom into the real world. I aspire to encourage my students to be kind, generous, and thoughtful when other people are involved.
