Students with high incidences of trauma, like those at our school, often struggle with emotional regulation. The items I have requested for this project are all shown to help provide sensory stimulation for students who are experiencing dysregulation, related to trauma or disability needs. I will use these items to begin to create a calming and welcoming environment for each student in the building to use when they are in need. The room will have calming sounds provided through the speaker I have requested, calming smells through essential oils, calming tools, like the bubble timers, and calming sights as I decorate the room in a safe way. There will be a miriade of sensory stimulating items like the sand trays, stomp pads, and swing board. These are especially helpful for children who seek sensory stimulation as are the bungee chairs. Some children need to have a time out in an enclosed environment where they feel safe. That is why I am requesting a tent. I also plan to have art supplies to assist in art therapy practices for students who need it. My hope as the school social worker is to have my office in this room and staff it with volunteers when I am not around. I will continue to build on the Zen Den over the years as my resources allow. I believe this project will have a major impact on the lives of the children in our school and our school's climate as a whole. When children have access to this safe environment in their school, I will be able to work with them on their individual emotional needs and the whole building will benefit.
