Funded Aug 17, 2021This year has been a very trying year for our kids as it is all throughout the country. It has been a struggle just to get the kids to get interested in school again. As an English teacher, trying to get the kids to read or like to read is a BIGGGG struggle. I am so blessed that I have a class library that will allow children to choose appropriate material and have their thirst for reading again!
Every Wednesday and Thursday are dedicated to Sustained Silent Reading. During this time, kids are encouraged to get books from the library to read in class. The seniors like the fact that I have a library in the class of books for them to choose from. Every Wednesday/Thursday for 30 minutes, the students read independently. MY class, the students choose high-interest books that they are willing to discuss in the class in a "Book Club" format.
For two of my students, I gifted them a book (of course I had to replace it)! A young lady, who struggles with self-esteem, felt that the story "Genesis Begins Again" related to her. Because of her reading ability, she was unable to finish during our allotted time, she promised me that if I would only let her finish the book, I would get it back. That was last semester! Another student really got into "Dear Justice" by Nic Stone. We would have conversation about it every day during class. I decided to gift her the Nic Stone series ( I own the other book- Dear Martin. I didn't mind. If they want to read, and I can make a way, I will try my best to do it. I am so grateful for your contribution! I will continue to help my kids grow and have a passion for reading!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Turner
