To add to my classroom library, I have chosen books that address empathy, emotions, and cooperation. For example, I will use "The Jelly Donut Difference" as a back-to-school starter for all grade levels with accompanying activities about how we can show kindness throughout the school. Helen Lester writes books such as "Hooway for Wodney Wat" that target social problems for children with speech and communication disorders. I will use the Lego community starter kit and marble run to encourage cooperation and working toward a common goal. Group therapy sessions almost always involve a fair amount of waiting for turns. Traditional board games are motivating, but do not provide young students with a way to stay busy, quiet and engaged between turns. Legos will provide an appropriate behavior and can be used individually or cooperatively. Similarly, the marble run will be used to teach students how to work together, communicate their ideas and work toward a common goal. Students will work hard during speech drills to "earn" marbles to roll down at the end!
